Trial of new leaflet for Disability Living Allowance

September 12, 2008 12:00 AM

The government's Disability and Carers Service (DCS) are introducing a new leaflet on Disability Living Allowance (DLA) for children over a 3 month trial period.

The aim of the leaflet is to tell parents and carers of children with additional needs about DLA and what it is paid for; encouraging them to find out more about DLA before they consider claiming, signposting them to the DCS website and Benefits Enquiry Line (BEL).

EDCM is campaigning for the government to take steps to end child poverty for families with disabled children, who are more likely to live in poverty than other families. In particular, EDCM is calling for more to be done to increase take-up of DLA - a key benefit for families with disabled children which helps families pay for basic essentials and helps lift them out of poverty.

The new leaflet is additional and complimentary to the existing DLA Child Leaflet, which parents have said is not available in places they go, and is too long for them to take the time to read. It offers parents a shorter format, designed to be quick to read, and easy to understand. DCS will evaluate its effectiveness both during and after the 3 month trial.

Success factors will be:

  • is the leaflet is in locations parents expect?
  • do the people that parents come into contact with give out the leaflet?
  • is the information clear and informative?
  • does the front page design attract parents to pick it up and read it?

If you would like to see and comment on the new leaflet or know of others who may do so, you can contact the Disability and Carers Service:

by telephone on 01253 330662 or

by e-mail at dlainfo.childvol@dwp.gsi.gov.uk

or by post at Disability and Carers Service, Customer and External Relations Directorate, Room 111, Norcross, Blackpool, FY5 3TA

Please provide your contact details and state how many leaflets you would like.

For the purpose of the trial the flyer has been printed in Standard English language only to keep costs manageable. Should this product prove successful, the flyer will also be available in all other DWP standard formats.
