Campaign targets potential voters

People with disabilities and migrant workers are being asked to make sure they are on Northern Ireland's electoral register.

The move is part of a campaign being launched to encourage people in NI to sign up to the register.

Chief electoral officer for Northern Ireland, Douglas Bain, said it "was straightforward" for migrant workers to join the register.

However, he said they had to meet "certain criteria". "Generally speaking, a person has to be over 17, has to be of the right nationality, which is either British, British Commonwealth or a member of an EU country," Mr Bain said. "They have to be living in Northern Ireland and have lived here for three months before they make their application."

Mr Bain was speaking ahead of the launch of a week-long series of a series public events intended to remind people of the importance of being included on the electoral register.
