Disabled man attacks scooter ban

22 Apr 2008

A disabled man has complained he is being discriminated against because he is not allowed to take his motorised scooter on to a bus. Bill Pearsall, of Woodside, Shropshire, has been unable to catch the No. 44 Arriva bus into Telford.

He said: "We have disabled bus passes saying we can use them anywhere in England on any bus. And then you come to try it and you can't."

Keith Myatt, of Arriva Midlands, said the ban was made on safety grounds. He added: "Unfortunately we can't accommodate motorised scooters with handlebars on board our buses. They can significantly affect access for passengers and our concerns are that safety could be compromised. That's something we really can't jeopardise."
