Factory closure fears spark anger

28 Feb 2008

An MP has expressed dismay over fears an Aberdeen factory which employs disabled workers could close.

Glencraft is involved in the furniture trade and most of the workers are blind or disabled.

Aberdeen South MP Anne Begg said she had learned of a planned threat to close the factory from April.

She said: "I am absolutely horrified to hear that as part of the Aberdeen City Council programme of cuts there are plans to close the Glencraft factory." The MP said: "This will leave 38 hard-working disabled people out of a job."

Glencraft is funded largely by Aberdeen City Council. No-one from the council has so far been available for comment.
