Government failing to prioritise effective mental health treatment - Gidley

5 Oct 2006

Commenting on today's Mind report on conditions in mental health wards, Liberal Democrat Health Spokesperson, Sandra Gidley MP said:

"Society is continually letting people with mental health problems down.

"This Government has failed to prioritise the effective treatment of people with mental health problems, with mental health wards suffering from NHS cuts.

"A clean, supportive and stimulating care environment, with access to non-drug treatment such as cognitive behavioural therapy, is vital to aid recovery.

"Action must also be taken to improve the experiences and perceptions of safety in mental health wards, starting with an end to mixed sex wards."

Applicability: this item refers to England. Due to devolution, detailed policy may be different in other areas of the UK.
