Guide to improve dementia care launches in Parliament

25 Jan 2014

The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) and the Carers Trust have launched a guide they have jointly developed to improving dementia care entitled the 'Triangle of Care' at an event in Parliament. Local MP, Mark Hunter, attended the launch to meet with one of his constituents, retired consultant Mr Peter Dunlop from Cheadle Hulme, who spoke at the event.

Hosted by the All Party Parliamentary Group on Dementia, attendees at the event heard how six key standards can help bring about better collaboration between the patient, the carer, and the health professionals working with them.

Commenting after the event, Mark said:

"I was grateful for the opportunity to meet with Mr Dunlop and his wife Dr Patricia Dunlop, and to understand more about the 'Triangle of Care' guide.

"It is so important that doctors and nurses work with, and listen carefully to, both carers and dementia patients to ensure they can provide the best possible treatment. This guide is a excellent collaboration between nurses and carers and I hope that this partnership can be replicated across health services."

Commenting on the event, Dr Peter Carter, Chief Executive and General Secretary of the RCN, said:

"We are very pleased to see this excellent piece of work officially launched in Parliament. When people with dementia go into hospital, it is essential that their carers not only feel included and involved in their care, but play an integral role in it."
