Mother designs adaptive clothes for son with Tommy Hilfiger

Fashion designer and mother, Mindy Scheier, has collaborated with major clothes brand Tommy Hilfiger to bring adaptive clothes to children with disabilities.

Mindy Scheier's son, Oliver, was born with a rare form of muscular dystrophy, this inspired her to start an adaptive clothing non-profit range called Runway of Dreams in 2013. This was brought about by her son's desire to be able to dress like other children and wear what he wanted like a pair of jeans, and be able to do so without struggle and with some form of independence. Runway of Dreams allows Oliver, and others with disabilities to be able to wear cool, stylish clothing adapted to their needs.

Runway of dreams uses technology to adapt mainstream clothing for different abled bodies. The range includes clothing which has been made to be fully adjustable, and also clothing which can be put on or taken off in various ways. Runway of Dreams works with MagnaRead to replace traditional buttons within in the range, making them less difficult to open and close. MagnaReady founded by Maura Horton developed a way in which those with disabilities can dress themselves and create a sense of independence regardless of ability, by creating a simple and effective product that magnetically infuses buttons.

Runway of Dreams is launching its first major brand collaboration with Tommy Hilfiger this week. Bringing adaptive clothing to the masses, the collection will be available in boys' sizes 4 to 20 and girls' sizes 4 to 18. The goal behind the launch for all involved in making it happen, was to bring clothes to stores which allow children with disabilities to be able to wear the same clothes as their peers.

The launch has included work with Tommy Hilfiger's customer service department to ensure understanding in the different functions of the clothing. In addition delivery of range has also been explored by ensuring the correct language and differently abled models are being used to show case and highlight how the clothing functions.

The innovative designs and concepts used to create this amazing fashion range, already has plans to expand with more collections on the horizon and talks with different brands and companies.
