Patients detained under the mental health act are often on mixed-sex wards where their safety may be seriously jeopardised, a key report warns. The Mental Health Act Commission also found young people on adult wards, a practice ministers have vowed to end.

Funeral held for '£5 bet' victim

Hundreds of mourners have paid their respects at the funeral of a disabled man kicked and punched to death for a £5 bet. Brent Martin, 23, was chased across two housing estates in Sunderland by three people he thought were his friends. A 21-year-old man and two teenagers, aged 16 and 17, face sentencing for his murder last August.

Government advisors recommend 'food for the brain' campaign

A significant contributor to the increasing rate of crime, aggression, depression and poor school performance is poor nutrition. That's the conclusion of the Parliamentary Food and Health Forum, who issue a report today urging for government to fund a campaign to research, increase awareness, and encourage us to eat more fish and whole foods, high in essential fats, vitamins and minerals.

Needy 'face social care struggle'

Elderly and disabled people in England are increasingly being denied social services, a report says. The Commission for Social Care Inspection said councils were tightening their criteria which determines who is eligible for care. The watchdog said the situation meant there were 281,000 people in need of help receiving none while another 450,000 suffered shortfalls in care.
