One-legged golfer sues council run golf course for discrimination

A golfer with a prosthetic leg is suing a local council for refusing to let him play on its course using a buggy. Paul Houghton's right leg was amputated in 2000 after he was affected by a lethal tissue-eating bacteria. Mr Houghton learned to walk again - and golf became an important part of life but he still also uses crutches and a wheelchair. He claims Brentwood Council in Essex discriminated against him but the council is defending the legal action.

Cambridgeshire wheelchair crash death driver sentenced

A woman who took a "totally unnecessary risk" by driving while her windscreen was dirty and killed her wheelchair-using cousin has been sentenced. Hayley Sterna, 51, crashed her car into Chris Clements' wheelchair while he was out with his dog on 4 January 2017.

A new treatment for severe asthma, is set for wider NHS distribution

A new treatment for severe asthma is set to be made more widely available on the NHS in the UK by the end of 2018. The procedure, bronchial thermoplasty, "melts" away excess muscle tissue in the lungs using radio frequency, making breathing easier. Previously there were strict criteria about who was eligible to receive it. But the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (Nice) says it can be offered more routinely, after it was proved to be safe and effective. Some people may still not be able to receive it because the final decision about whether to offer the procedure lies with local health bodies.

East Yorkshire brewery highlights Learning Disability

People with learning disabilities are trying to raise awareness of their condition by brewing beer. Spotlight Brewing has been set up in an outbuilding at a residential care home in Snaith, near Goole, East Yorkshire. As well as providing work experience for the residents, the company has named its range of beers after different disabilities.
