Learning Disability care hangs in the balance

A leading provider of care for people with learning disabilities says it might have to pull out of some services if a row over back pay for staff is not settled soon. Mencap says it might have to end its involvement in running more than 200 residential care homes and services affecting more than 2,000 people with serious learning disabilities. The services would have to be taken over by local authorities. A government spokesman said further clarity would be provided in the coming weeks.

Student told disability prevents him gaining journalism award

A student has been told his disability means he will not receive a qualification in journalism. Kyle Gunn, 19, from Johnstone, Renfrewshire, has cerebral palsy and is unable to complete the shorthand element of his course. Having spent the past year on the NQ Media Studies course at Glasgow Clyde College, Kyle was hoping to progress onto the two-year HND Practical Journalism course.

A report from a UN committee has criticised the UK government for its treatment of disabled people, saying it needs to do much more to protect the rights of the disabled. The UK is required to regularly report to the UN on how it is honouring the Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities.

Woman awarded £11,000 in disability discrimination case

A woman who asked her employer to reduce her working hours because of her mental health has been awarded more than £11,000. A tribunal found that the car firm, Charles Hurst, had discriminated against Marie-Claire McLaughlin under the Disability Act.

One year on – impact of adult care charging policy revealed.

In August 2016 Wiltshire Council introduced a new system of charging for adult care which resulted in many people paying more for the services provided by the council. About 3,500 people are potentially hit by the changes. However they first have to have an assessment of their financial circumstances, with assessments being done annually thereafter.
