A disabled woman from Hereford says she has lost her independence after the theft of her electric wheelchair. Julie Bishop's £3,000 chair was taken from outside her flat in the Warndon area of the city.

Carers save the UK '£87bn a year'

The unpaid work of carers saves the UK £87bn per year - more than the total amount spent by the NHS in the last financial year, say experts. The figure, calculated by the University of Leeds for the charity Carers UK, is up 52% since the last estimate, calculated in 2002. The average person caring for a sick or frail relative is now estimated to save the nation more than £15,260 a year. The government said measures had been taken to help carers, with more due.

Manx Government 'failing carers'

The Manx government is failing to provide adequate respite care and needs dramatically improving, an organisation on the Isle of Man claims. Aggrieved Carers Helping Each (ACHE), is calling for the government to provide one overnight stay a week and a week's holiday respite per carer.

Thieves hit disabled riding group

Thieves have targeted a riding for the disabled centre in Bedfordshire taking saddles, bridles and specialist equipment worth thousands of pounds. Two doors to the tack room were smashed open in the raid at the Elisabeth Curtis Centre in Bromham.
